The mission of the Wilbur & McMahon Schools is to develop a comprehensive educational community with high academic standards that challenge all students to love learning and to become skilled communicators and critical thinkers who are respectful, motivated, responsible, and self confident contributors to their community and the world.
The project consists of renovations to the existing, two-story school facility, limited site improvements and utility infrastructure work. The existing building is approximately 58,000 sf in area. It was originally constructed in 1929 for use as a school and subsequently added onto in the 1930's, 1950's, 1970's and 1990's. The original portion of the building is constructed of exterior load-bearing masonry walls with an un-coursed rubble stone veneer. The floor and roof framing consists of conventional nominal wood framing. The 1930's and 1950's wings are constructed with conventional nominal wood framed construction and a rubble stone veneer exterior. The 1959 gym addition utilizes a structural wood bent system with conventional nominal wood roof framing. The exterior walls are constructed of nonload-bearing masonry with a brick veneer exterior. The 1970's wing is constructed with steel columns, laminated wood beams and a structural wood roof deck. Exterior walls consist of non-load-bearing masonry with a brick veneer exterior.
The major focus of this project is to update the building systems, make the building safe, code compliant, handicapped accessible and weathertight. The proposed work requires interaction with every part of the facility. Walls, ceilings, floors, doors, roofs, etc. will be impacted for replacement and upgrade of the major systems. Work consists of, but is not necessarily limited to the following: selective demolition, hazardous material abatement, limited site work, landscaping, concrete, masonry, metal fabrications, rough and finish carpentry, building insulation, roofing, exterior cladding, joint sealants, firestopping systems, hollow metal doors and frames, wood doors, exterior windows, aluminum entrances and storefront, glazing, light gage metal framing, interior finishes, signage, toilet compartments, casework, fire extinguishers, toilet accessories, kitchen equipment and elevator. New sprinkler system, fire alarm system upgrades, new HVAC systems, new plumbing infrastructure, electrical upgrades, new telephone and data systems. Refer to the attached floor plans and site plans for general orientation.
The project has been phased to ensure student and staff safety in the occupied portions of the building during construction activities. The intent is to fully vacate the classroom portions of the facility for the entire 2012-2013 school year. Phase I includes the work for these areas of the facility. During phase I, the town will continue to occupy and utilize the gymnasium and locker facilities. Phase II includes the work in the gymnasium and locker rooms. Refer to the attached Phasing Plan PH01 for additional information.
